When the Java Plug-in is enabled for a browser, you can make use of the Java Console.  This is a very useful tool for troubleshooting problems with Java applets.  Here's what it looks like, for Java 6 / 1.6:

Note that it will tell you the version of the Java Plug-in being used (here, Java 6 -- specifically, 1.6.0_02).

In addition, it lists a set of commands that you can enter to cause the Java Console to do useful things.
