First, if you need to use the Java Console, you need to turn it on. Your first place to do this is in the Java Control Panel:
For normal operations, you probably want to set "Do not start console", because if you set "Show console", the console will appear whenever your browser loads a Java applet; most people will find this annoying. However, if you're trying to figure out why something didn't work correctly, then "Show console" is probably appropriate.
