What is a Pousada?
Always wanted to spend the night in a medieval castle? Or in a monastery? Or perhaps in a convivial place with a wonderful view? In Portugal, this is possible. Here you will find the so-called pousadas: charming, usually luxurious, hotels that are housed in beautiful history buildings. By furnishing monasteries, palaces, and castles as tourist accommodations, a piece of culture and tradition is preserved that might otherwise have been lost long ago. The pousadas can be found throughout Portugal.
Pousadas de Portugal is a chain of luxury, traditional or historical hotels in Portugal. Formerly run by the Portuguese State, they are now run by the Pestana Group, which in September 2003 won a public bid for a 40-year running concession.
