Cheese Strata (with Meat or Meatless)
Strata is a family of layered casserole dishes in American cuisine. The most common modern variant is a brunch dish, made from a mixture which mainly consists of bread, eggs and cheese. It may also include meat or vegetables.

Ingredients
- 12 slices hearty bread cut into 1-inch pieces (no larger)
- 12 oz sharp Cheddar cheese grated
- 6 eggs slightly beaten
- 3½ cups whole milk
- 2 Tbsp minced onion cooked
- ¼ tsp ground mustard
Meatless version:
- 1 10-oz pkg chopped frozen broccoli cooked and drained
- 2 cups cooked vegetables (such as spinach, bell pepper, mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, etc.
Meat version:
- 1 10-oz pkg chopped frozen broccoli cooked and drained
- 2 cups ham or cooked sausage cut up
Instructions
- Butter a 9"x13" pan.
- Spread half the bread pieces on bottom of pan.
- Alternate layers of cooked meat (if using), vegetables, cheese, and remaining bread.
- Combine the beaten eggs, milk, onion, and mustard. Pour over the casserole.
- Cover and refrigerate overnight.
- Bake uncovered at 325°F for 55 minutes, until the center is set. Remove from oven and let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
