class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Japanese language, is a language <em>isolate<\/em> (i.e., a language unrelated to any other language) and one of the world\u2019s major languages, with more than 127 million speakers in the early 21st century. It is primarily spoken throughout the Japanese archipelago; there are also some 1.5 million Japanese immigrants and their descendants living abroad, mainly in North and South America, who have varying degrees of proficiency in Japanese. Since the mid-20th century, no nation other than Japan has used Japanese as a first or a second language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Japanese_Writing_System\"><\/span>The Japanese Writing System<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The Japanese alphabet is really three writing systems that work together. These three systems are called <em>hiragana<\/em>, <em>katakana<\/em> and <em>kanji<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Romaji<\/em> isn&#8217;t one of the Japanese writing systems. It&#8217;s the Roman alphabetization of the Japanese language. It can be helpful in some situations, though <em>romaji<\/em> isn&#8217;t a reliable substitute for <em>hiragana<\/em>, <em>katakana<\/em> or <em>kanji<\/em> .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hiragana_and_Katakana\"><\/span>Hiragana and Katakana<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Hiragana<\/em> and <em>katakana<\/em> are two different ways to write the same set of 46 sounds. They\u2019re the closest the Japanese language has to an alphabet. The primary difference between this kind of writing system \u2013 technically a &#8216;syllabary&#8217; \u2013 and not an &#8216;alphabet&#8217;: Characters generally represent a whole sound (like \u2018ki\u2019 or \u2018ra\u2019), rather than individual letters (like \u2018k\u2019 or \u2018r\u2019).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually, we write native Japanese words using <em>hiragana<\/em>, while <em>katakana<\/em> is used for words borrowed from other languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, for example, <em>arigatou<\/em>, Japanese for \u201cthank you\u201d, is typically written \u3042\u308a\u304c\u3068\u3046 (a ri ga to u) using <em>hiragana<\/em> characters, whereas \u201cAmerica\u201d is written \u30a2\u30e1\u30ea\u30ab (a me ri ka) using <em>katakana<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hiragana\"><\/span>Hiragana<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Hiragana<\/em> emerged as a manual simplification via cursive script of the most phonetically widespread kanji among those who could read and write during the Heian period (794\u20131185). However, the Japanese people of that era probably had little to no comprehension of the script, and they would remain relatively illiterate until the 5th century AD in the Kofun period, when writing in Japan became more widespread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike katakana and hiragana, kanji aren\u2019t always characters you put together to make sounds and words. <em>Kanji<\/em> are symbols that mean a whole word or idea. Many of them were borrowed from Chinese characters at different times over the past several centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several thousand kanji characters are in regular use, which mostly originate from traditional Chinese characters. Others made in Japan are referred to as &#8220;Japanese kanji&#8221;. Each character has an intrinsic meaning (or range of meanings), and most have more than one pronunciation, the choice of which depends on context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Japanese primary and secondary school students are required to learn 2,136<em> j\u014dy\u014d kanji<\/em> (&#8220;regular-use kanji&#8221;) as of 2010.
