{"id":736,"date":"2023-03-25T21:55:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-25T21:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bhiggs.x10hosting.com\/australia-and-newzealand\/?p=736"},"modified":"2023-04-24T17:00:39","modified_gmt":"2023-04-24T17:00:39","slug":"katoomba-scenic-railway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bhiggs.x10hosting.com\/australia-and-newzealand\/2023\/03\/25\/katoomba-scenic-railway\/","title":{"rendered":"Katoomba Scenic Railway"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, we drove to the Katoomba Scenic Railway, an incline railway that was originally constructed for a coal and&nbsp;oil shale&nbsp;mining operation in the&nbsp;Jamison Valley&nbsp;in the 1880s, in order&nbsp;to haul the coal and shale from the valley floor up to the escarpment above. From 1928 to 1945, it carried coal during the week and passengers at weekends. The coal mine was closed in 1945 after which it remained as a tourist attraction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default has-medium-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The Scenic Railway makes many claims to be the steepest passenger railway, the steepest funicular, and the steepest incline in the world. predictably, to a gift shop, we picked up the bus again, and were taken to Katoomba, where we ate at a very good, Mom &amp; Pop style pie shop, the <em>Bakehouse on Wentworth<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" src=\"https:\/\/bhiggs.x10hosting.com\/australia-and-newzealand\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/pie-display-and-dining.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-799\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bhiggs.x10hosting.com\/australia-and-newzealand\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/pie-display-and-dining.jpg 550w, us off, we had to cross a street called <strong>Megalong St<\/strong>. That name appealed to my sense of humour!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apparently, Australians love their pies &#8212; we were told that that&#8217;s what they eat at Australian Rules Football games, and elsewhere too. I ate a Steak &amp; Kidney Pie, and it was very good.
