The textbook for this course is:
CORE Java 2, Volume II -- Advanced
Features, by Cay S. Horstmann &
Gary Cornell, published by Prentice-Hall.
Volume I of the same book is also a useful reference for
some topics in this course:
CORE Java 1.2, Volume I -- Fundamentals,
by Cay S. Horstmann & Gary Cornell, published by Prentice-Hall.
It's very hard to stay abreast of the latest books on Java. I have found the following books to be useful references
(they are listed in no particular order), however, I make no claim that this
list is, or will stay, up to date:
- Advanced Java 2: Development for
Enterprise Applications (2nd Edition),
by Clifford J. Berg, Prentice-Hall, 2000, ISBN
0-13-084875-1
- Professional Java Server
Programming, Wrox
Press, 1999, ISBN 1-861002-77-7
- Hacking Java: The Java Professional's
Resource Kit, by Mark Wutka, Que, 1997, ISBN 0-7897-0935-X
- Java 1.1 Unleashed, by
Michael Morrison, et. al, Sams, 1997, ISBN 1-57521-298-6
- Java 1.2 Unleashed, by
Jamie Jaworski, Sams, 1998, ISBN 1-57521-389-3
(Note that the above two books both contain useful
information, and appear not to be strongly related,
despite the impression that the latter is merely a
newer version of the former.)
- JDBC Database Access with Java: A
Tutorial and Annotated Reference, by
Graham Hamilton, Rick Catell, & Maydene Fisher, Addison-Wesley,
1997, ISBN 0-201-30995-5
- Database Programming with JDBC and Java,
by George Reese, O'Reilly Associates, 1997, ISBN
1-56592-270-0
- Developing Java Beans, by
Robert Englander, O'Reilly Associates, 1997, ISBN
1-56592-289-1
The Nutshell series by O'Reilly Associates includes some good
references (they contain some tutorials, also):
- Java in a Nutshell, 2nd Edition: A
Desktop Quick Reference (covers
Java 1.1), by David Flanagan, 1997, ISBN
1-56592-262-X
- Java in a Nutshell, 3nd Edition: A
Desktop Quick Reference (covers
Java 1.2 and 1.3), by David Flanagan, 1999, ISBN
1-56592-487-8
- Java Examples in a Nutshell: A Tutorial
Companion to Java in a Nutshell, by
David Flanagan, 1997, ISBN 1-56592-371-5
- Java Enterprise in a Nutshell: A Desktop
Quick Reference, by David Flanagan, Jim
Farley, William Crawford, and Kris Magnusson, 1999,
ISBN 1-56592-483-5
- Java Foundation Classes in a Nutshell: A
Desktop Quick Reference, by David
Flanagan, 1999, ISBN 1-56592-488-6
The following magazines are useful references, although some have gone
away, or been taken over by other organizations:
There are a host of web sites providing Java resources on
the web. Among them are:
