Other vendors of Java IDEs provide the Sun JDK stuff (or use the Sun Java SDK under the covers), plus their own IDE, class libraries, debugging environment, etc:

• Sun Microsystems
  • NetBeans (www.netbeans.org)-- implemented in Java
• www.eclipse.org
  • Eclipse -- a configurable IDE, written in Java
• www.jedit.org
  • jEdit -- a configurable editor, written in Java
• Plus lots of others

All of them are much friendlier than the Sun Java SDK, even though they often use the Java SDK components behind the scenes.  Refer to each vendor's documentation for details.
