Swing Applets & Browser JDK Support

If you want to write Java applets using the Swing package (actually, using code generated by any recent version of Java), you must have the appropriate version of the Java plug-in installed and enabled. The Java plug-in is installed on your computer when you install the JDK/JRE.

Some browsers may come with a version of the Java plug-in, or may work with an installed Java Plug-in right "out of the box".

Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/) -- this is my recommended browser
Opera (http://www.opera.com/) -- a highly standards-compliant browser.
